Escape from Alcatraz

Monday, March 8th, 2010

This movie was on TV the other night.

Prison uniform consisted of:  white tee, chambray shirt, grey chinos, white socks, leather shoes, pea coat.  It feels weird that my wardrobe is becoming convict style.

I fell asleep before the ending.  That’s not a reflection on the movie, just how tired I was.

The Pacific

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

I doubt The Pacific can be as good as Band of Brothers, but I will be watching in 2010 to find out.

Just reading through the Wikipedia article on The Pacific, a lot of the filming has taken place right here in Melbourne.  We saw them blocking off Flinders Street stations for a few scenes.

Tweed VS Pea (3 Days of the Condor)

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

tweedVSpea

People were blogging about this a while ago, but I only just got around to re-watching 3 Days of the Condor (a 1975 espionage film starring Robert Redford).  Redford wears some nice clothes, and the movie is great too.

I remember back when I originally saw the film, I wanted Redford’s herringbone tweed jacket.  I was too young and didn’t have the means to buy anything like that at the time.  Well, over the following years, tweed jackets pretty much became the standard uniform of university lecturers – who added suede elbow patches, and tended to make them not as cool anymore.

Anyway, re-watching the film, it’s the Pea Coat which captures my attention (as indigofan readers would expect).  Redford pops the collar on both jackets, the Pea Coat has a much bigger collar, so of course the Pea Coat wins.  Hah.

There’s some other nice things in the wardrobe, like the aviator specs, denim shirt, tweed tie.  The old bronco van is cool too.

Michel Gondry x Levis

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

I guess I’m very late on this one. Incredible video that Michel Gondry made for Levis. It has a great feel, and really looks old.

Wikipedia:

According to the Guinness World Records 2004, Michel Gondry’s Levi’s 501 Jeans “Drugstore” spot holds the record for “Most awards won by a TV commercial”.[2] The commercial was never aired in North America because of the suggestive content involving purchasing latex condoms.

Vito Corleone Wardrobe

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

The Godfather II has some great period clothing.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071562/
Robert De Niro as Vito Corleone sports some nice caps, braces, long johns, shirts with a variety of collars (big, rounded, and no collar).

You should dress like this when you are starting your own underground organised criminal society.
Check out the Godfather series if you haven’t seen it before. It’s on blu-ray if you have the hardware.

On a side note: I saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which has some interesting wardrobe viewing.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421715/

“Filmmakers worked closely with Levi’s to obtain clothing items from their Levi’s Vintage Clothing collection to authenticate various time periods captured throughout the film.”

If you’re time-poor, then I’d recommend watching the Godfather rather than Benjamin Button.

Gift suggestion: Band of Brothers Blu-Ray

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Sorry for the break in postings. I’ve been busy moving house.
Here’s something I recommend you get.

I’ve had this Band of Brothers blu-ray box set for a few weeks now, and I’m half-way through. If you’ve seen the series before, you know how good it is, but the added extras in the blu-ray version are quite amazing.

You can watch each episode in an interactive timeline mode which includes maps and other information.

Or you can watch it in “In the words of Easy Company” mode, where the original vets pop-up in picture-in-picture windows, and they explain quite a lot about what you are watching.

The picture-in-picture mode is incredible. It continually reminds you that what you are watching really happened.

Here’s a ref link to buy it on Amazon

Ralph Lauren Interview 1993

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

I saw this a while ago, and lost track of which blog I found it on. Sorry.

It’s an hour long interview with Ralph. He talks about a lot of things which are quite interesting. It was nice to hear the discussion around whether Ralph is a designer because it is reasonably valid that he isn’t creative at developing new garment structures or construction. He borrows ideas, and isn’t doing something original. Ralph takes these comments in his stride. His approach of making clothing is that he is inspired by styles and moods. And that he wanted to make clothes that he wanted to wear (or that he would like his girlfriend to wear) …but you couldn’t find these clothes in stores.

He doesn’t like fashion, but believes in timeless-ness.

Video: Tokyo Eye Denim Special

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I found this video via the superfuture forums. It has a nice long segment on Japanese denim presented by Gordon Heffner from BIG in New York. It looks like he goes to Hinoya in Ueno. And I believe there is some background to the story of Gordon hurting his hand. I think he did this when chainstitching a lot of denim.

Hey Gordon… I got the Duck Diggers. Thanks for the delivery!

Movie: Blue Jean Confidential CBC Documentary

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

If you haven’t seen this documentary you can watch it online here:
http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/confidential/bluejean_video.html
It’s quite good. It includes interviews with Adriano Goldschmied, Lynn Downey and James Sullivan.
And the makers even travelled to Kojima japan to check out the Rampuya and interview some hardcore collectors.
